Go to http://www.ancestry.com/save/charts/ancchart.htm to get the forms that will assist you in the collection and recording of your data.
Another item to look into would be a genealogical software package. There are several packages available (some free) but you must decide which one does what you want/need.
Once you have your personal information recorded you need to next work on your immediate family (parents, grand-parents, etc.). Talk with other family members, record any information that they can give you (you must verify all that you can), sometimes information given today can not be verified for years, but may end up tying together other information that you can not link otherwise.
